Liu’s Clean & Jerk Gold & Tian’s Triple-Gold Sweep at Asian Champs

Liu Huanhua, China’s reigning Olympic gold medalist, lit up the stage at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jiangshan, Zhejiang Province on Wednesday. Competing in the men’s 102kg category, Liu powered through the clean and jerk phase with impressive lifts of 220kg and then 230kg to secure gold in that segment and claim the overall title with a total of 410kg! Despite a fierce snatch round—when Turkmenistan’s Hasanbayev Davranbek edged ahead with 182kg—Liu’s determination shone through. 💪

For those new to weightlifting: competitors get three attempts in both the snatch and the clean & jerk, with the best lift from each added to form their final total.

On the women’s side in the 87kg category, excitement was equally high. Tian Dongping stunned the crowd by clinching gold in the snatch with 118kg, while Jiang Yujia took silver. Tian then delivered a solid performance in the clean and jerk, lifting 141kg on her first attempt, and wrapped up a remarkable triple-gold sweep with an overall total of 259kg. Her win is sure to inspire emerging athletes from bustling metropolises across South and Southeast Asia!

This electrifying display of strength and perseverance truly captures the spirit of the sport, resonating with young, dynamic audiences from Jakarta to Bangalore.
