Singapore PM Eyes Future-Ready Ties on China Visit

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has kicked off a new chapter in bilateral relations as he gears up for his first official visit to China. With the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties in the backdrop, he reaffirmed Singapore's commitment to a dynamic, future-oriented partnership. 🇸🇬🇨🇳

In an exclusive conversation with China Media Group, PM Wong laid out three key objectives: strengthen ties with Chinese leaders, deepen long-term cooperation, and address regional and global challenges in today’s fast-changing world. His vision is all about forward-thinking innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation.

The PM highlighted that collaborations go well beyond traditional infrastructure. Flagship projects such as the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-City have evolved into vibrant platforms that fuel green growth and tech innovation. Singapore is also exploring new frontiers in low-carbon energy and biomedical sciences – paving the way for a cleaner, healthier future. 🌱

Wong also applauded the economic journey of the Chinese mainland, marveling at its rapid urban transformation and the resilience of its people, which he described as nothing short of an “economic miracle.” He warned that protectionist moves, like imposing punitive tariffs, could destabilize global trade and hurt smaller, open economies.

Emphasizing the importance of reform rather than retreat, PM Wong stressed that improving multilateral systems—through initiatives like ASEAN, RCEP, and CPTPP—will benefit everyone. His message is clear: instead of scrapping the existing order, we must work together to make it better for all.

Looking ahead, as he participates at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions (Summer Davos) in Tianjin, PM Wong will continue championing global cooperation and openness. In a world where fair rules and longstanding norms are more crucial than ever, his call for renewed commitment is both timely and inspiring.
