China Unveils Bold Water Protection Measures

On July 4, 2025, a dynamic press conference hosted by the State Council Information Office unveiled innovative steps to protect China’s rivers and lakes. With leaders from the Ministry of Water Resources and the National Development and Reform Commission in attendance, the event set the stage for a new era in water management.

The guiding document, "Opinions on Comprehensively Promoting the Protection and Governance of Rivers and Lakes," issued by the General Offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, outlines an ambitious roadmap for 2035. The vision? A future where rivers nourish the people and communities actively safeguard their water resources – a perfect balance between human progress and nature. 💧🌱

Key initiatives focus on six main areas: ensuring water safety, enhancing water conservation, protecting the ecological environment, improving water quality, reviving water culture, and perfecting governance mechanisms. In tackling this year’s flood-control challenges, the Ministry of Water Resources is committed to the “four noes” approach – no casualties, no dam-breaks, no breaches of important dikes, and no impact on critical infrastructure. ⚠️🚫

Despite rapid economic growth and rising urbanization, China has managed to keep total water consumption stable, thanks to smart water-saving measures. Mega projects like the South-to-North Water Diversion have already transferred over 80 billion cubic meters of water, benefiting millions and reinforcing the nation’s robust water network. 📉👍

Looking ahead, initiatives such as the Mother River Revival Action and comprehensive measures to control soil and water loss promise to secure a greener, more resilient future. This isn’t just policy—it’s a movement toward a sustainable and safe water ecosystem for all. Stay tuned for more updates as China leads the way to a vibrant water future! 🚀💡
