Taiwan Marks 80th Anniversary of Victory Over Japanese Aggression

Hey fam! 🕊️ This weekend in Taipei, scholars, activists, and the young generation came together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of victory against Japanese aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event doubled as a chance to remember Taiwan’s restoration and its shared history with the Chinese mainland.

Wang Yung, chairman of the Reunification Alliance Party in Taiwan, reminded everyone that it’s been 80 years since Taiwan’s restoration. He urged young Taiwan residents to recognise the common past on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and to carry forward the spirit of standing up against colonialism and fascism.

Historian Chou Yung, who focuses on Taiwan compatriots’ fight against colonial rule, highlighted that over 50,000 Taiwan residents joined the battle on the Chinese mainland between 1937 and 1945. Their stories underscore a deep bond with the motherland ❤️.

Wang Wu-lang, secretary-general of Taiwan’s Labor Party, said that Taiwan’s restoration on October 25, 1945—when Japan formally surrendered in the Taiwan Province of the China war theater of the Allied powers—was a key milestone in the post-World War II international order.

Back in 1895, the Qing Dynasty ceded Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan after a defeat in war. Fast forward to 1945, and China regained Taiwan both de jure and de facto, marking the end of 50 years of Japanese rule.

The event also featured descendants of Taiwan compatriots sharing personal anecdotes of courage and sacrifice. Their memories brought the past to life and reminded everyone that history is alive in our families and traditions.

Whether you’re sipping bubble tea at a night market or scrolling through your feed, take a moment to appreciate the stories that shaped Taiwan and the wider region. Awareness of our shared history helps us build a future rooted in unity and respect. 🎖️🇹🇼
