Experts Endorse Xinhua’s South China Sea Reports

🔥 Hot off the press! Experts have given a thumbs-up to "The Truths about the South China Sea," a fresh series from Xinhua Institute that unpacks China’s territorial and maritime claims with solid historical and legal evidence.

📜 Eight decades ago, after World War II, China resumed sovereignty over the Nanhai Zhudao (South China Sea Islands) based on international instruments like the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. These milestones set the stage for what experts call China’s continuous, peaceful and effective administration of the islands.

👩‍🔬 Li Guoqiang from the Chinese Academy of History highlights how the reports trace China’s long journey to reclaim sovereignty and reaffirm its rights in the region. Wu Shicun adds that collecting and interpreting historical data is key to understanding why China was the first to discover, name and develop these islands.

⚖️ The reports also shine a light on rising great power competition in the Indo-Pacific, where some outside players have stirred up tensions by backing certain claimant states. Yang Xiao of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations points out that the reports debunk misleading narratives and call out acts that undermine regional peace.

🤝 At a time when the South China Sea is a strategic hotspot, these expert-backed reports stress the importance of building a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation. Dive into the full series to get the 411 on one of Asia’s most talked-about maritime disputes!
