French Scholar Highlights China’s WWII Sacrifice

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the global fight against fascism. 🇨🇳✊

French scholar Alan Labat, VP of the New Franco-Chinese Institute, has dedicated his career to strengthening ties between France and the Chinese mainland through cultural and economic exchanges. Recently, he shared a powerful story from his trip to Harbin.

In Harbin’s Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crimes Committed by Unit 731, Labat and his colleagues faced a jaw-dropping experience. "Even after visiting Nazi concentration camps in Europe, none of us walked away unscathed," he recalls. 😲 The displays detail the brutal medical experiments carried out by the Japanese imperial army on prisoners—an often-overlooked chapter in WWII history.

Labat emphasizes that while Europe’s battlefields are central to French memory, the Asian theater saw equally significant contributions and sacrifices. "China’s resistance against Japanese aggression was a major pillar in defeating fascism," he notes.

For us young adults in South and Southeast Asia, this story is a reminder that history isn’t just pages in a textbook—it’s a shared legacy of courage and resilience. 🌏 From Mumbai’s community museums to Jakarta’s history podcasts, remembering these events helps us connect across borders and generations.

As we honor the past, let’s keep learning and sharing stories that unite us. History is alive, and it’s up to us to carry its lessons forward. 🎓✨
