Hey fam! 🎉 Today, the UN General Assembly came together for the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. It’s our annual reminder that peace isn’t just a dream—it’s a mission we all share!
Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN’s High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, said, ‘In a world full of conflict and mistrust, banning nuclear tests isn’t just a technical rule—it’s a moral must.’ 💪
Flashback: 80 years ago, the first nuclear test and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki changed history. Over the Cold War years, roughly 2,000 nuclear blasts rocked the planet—about one every week! 🌏💥
But there’s hope. Since the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) opened in 1996, fewer than a dozen tests have happened. According to CTBT Organization’s Robert Floyd, that’s a major win for science, collaboration, and humanity.
Nuclear tech isn’t all about weapons—it also fights cancer, boosts agriculture, protects ecosystems, and powers clean energy ⚡🌿. Vivian Okeke from the International Atomic Energy Agency reminds us that safe use is key to real progress.
Every August 29, we learn, share, and commit to ending nuclear tests—and keeping our world nuclear-weapon-free. Let’s keep this convo alive! 📲✨
