Ozone Layer on the Mend: 2024 Ozone Hole Shrinks! 🌍✨

Good news for Planet Earth! 🌍 According to the latest Ozone Bulletin from the World Meteorological Organization, the protective ozone layer is on the mend, and the 2024 ozone hole was smaller than in recent years.

Year-to-year swings in ozone levels are influenced by natural atmospheric factors, but the overall recovery trend really highlights the power of coordinated global action. This success story traces back to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol—landmarks of multilateral cooperation that kicked off 40 years ago on World Ozone Day.

Under the Montreal Protocol, over 99% of ozone-depleting substances—used in everything from air conditioning and refrigeration to firefighting foam and hairspray—have been phased out. As a result, the ozone layer is on track to return to 1980s levels by mid-century. Cue the celebration! 🎉

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that four decades ago nations united in action guided by science, and today the ozone layer is healing. When we follow the science, big progress is possible.

Healing ozone means lower UV exposure, which cuts risks of skin cancer, cataracts, and ecosystem damage. It’s proof that global cooperation can deliver real, lasting change. Let’s keep this momentum going! 💪
