Xi’s Bold Climate Pitch at UN Climate Summit 2025

In a video address to the United Nations Climate Summit 2025 on September 24, Chinese President Xi Jinping marked the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement as a pivotal moment for global climate action 🌍. He highlighted three key priorities for countries as they prepare and deliver their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

1. Building Confidence: Xi stressed that a green, low-carbon future is the trend of our time. He urged nations to stay focused, boost ambition, and push for real progress on NDCs to keep momentum in global climate governance.

2. Honoring Responsibilities: Fairness is at the core of the green transition, Xi said. Developed nations should lead emission cuts and provide more financial and tech support to developing countries, ensuring the transition narrows the North-South gap.

3. Deepening Cooperation: With booming demand for green solutions, Xi called for stronger collaboration on green technologies, industries, and trade. Free flow of clean products can help all regions reap the benefits of sustainable growth.

He also unveiled China’s new climate targets to 2035:

  • Cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 7–10% from peak levels
  • Increase non-fossil energy share to over 30%
  • Grow wind & solar capacity 6× vs. 2020, aiming for 3,600 GW
  • Raise forest stock to over 24 billion m³
  • Make new energy vehicles mainstream in sales
  • Expand the national carbon trading market to cover major sectors
  • Establish a climate-adaptive society

Xi wrapped up by reminding everyone that "great visions require concrete actions" 🌱. As young changemakers from South and Southeast Asia, we’re in the fast lane—let’s ramp up our green efforts and shape a sustainable tomorrow together!
