It’s been 10 years since the Paris Agreement dropped, and at this year’s UN Climate Summit, President Xi Jinping spoke via video, serving up some global climate inspo 🌍✨.
He reminded everyone that climate governance is at a “key stage” – meaning multilateral teamwork needs a major level-up, especially as protectionist vibes and funding pullbacks test global unity.
Enter the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), China’s big-picture playbook for inclusive, principle-based cooperation. Think of it as a new game plan to get every nation—from Jakarta to Delhi—on the same squad.
Xi also rolled out China’s latest NDCs (aka nationally determined contributions, or each nation’s roadmap to cut emissions):
- Making EVs the norm in new car sales 🚗⚡
- Expanding the National Carbon Emissions Trading Market to cover major polluters
- Building a climate-adaptive society ready for heatwaves and storms
China’s green credentials are already impressive: forest coverage topped 25%, total forest stock passed 20 billion m³, and its forests and grasslands absorb over 1.2 billion tons of CO₂ each year—leading the world per UNFCCC data.
For young people across South and Southeast Asia, this isn’t distant policy drama. From EV startups in Bangalore to mangrove restoration in the Philippines, there’s huge space to innovate, partner up, and drive real change.
