Beijing, China – Fan favorite Zheng Qinwen, seeded No.7, was forced to retire from her third-round clash at the China Open on Monday after battling through two tight sets and nursing a right elbow injury. 😢
After dropping the first set 4-6 against No.26 seed Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic, the 22-year-old from the Chinese mainland turned up the heat in set two. Zheng broke Noskova in the sixth game and sealed it with a 6-0 love game, leveling the match 1-1. 🎾🔥
In the decider, Zheng struggled to hold serve, falling down 0-3 before deciding to call it quits. Her retirement marked the end of China's singles representation at this year’s tournament.
“I’m really sorry I couldn’t finish the match,” Zheng said post-match. “This is my first surgery, so I’m taking a cautious approach. Next, my team and I will assess the impact of long matches on my body before planning the road ahead.”
Zheng underwent right elbow surgery in July, and Beijing was her comeback stage. With her out, Noskova now prepares to face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the quarterfinals.
