As of Wednesday morning, rescue teams have confirmed 69 lives lost 💔 and over 147 injured, according to the Philippines’ Office of Civil Defense.
Bogo City, the epicenter, bore the brunt with 30 fatalities. Nearby towns Medellin (10), San Remigio (22), Tabogon (5) and the municipalities of Sogod and Tabuelan (1 each) also suffered tragic losses as walls and buildings crumbled 🏚️.
Search and rescue ops are still on, digging through debris to find survivors. With more than 600 aftershocks recorded, every tremor keeps everyone on edge ⚡.
The Cebu provincial government declared a state of calamity, unlocking emergency funds to fast-track relief, rehab and freeze prices on essentials like rice, eggs and bottled water 🍚🥚💧.
The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for earthquakes and volcanic activity 🌋. This quake hit just 5 km underground, about 19 km northeast of Bogo.
