UN at 80: Renewing Health, Rights & Dignity for All

October 24 marks the UN's 80th birthday! 🌟 Since its launch in 1945, the UN has pushed for peace, better living standards and fundamental human rights around the world.

UNFPA: Championing Population & Health

In 1967, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) kicked off to tackle demographic change—that is, how populations grow and shift. Early wins included supporting the first modern population censuses and training demographers to map out our global community.

Fast forward to 1994: the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo connected population growth, development, and sexual and reproductive health. It underscored that empowering women and investing in youth are vital for a sustainable future. A year later, the Beijing Platform for Action reinforced these goals with a landmark gender equality agenda.

Impact in 150+ Countries & Regions

Today, UNFPA operates in more than 150 countries and regions, ensuring every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person can reach their potential. From local health clinics to mobile outreach in rural areas, UNFPA helps build stronger health systems that stand the test of time.

Spotlight: Partnership with the Chinese Mainland

Collaboration with the Chinese mainland began in 1979. In the 1980s, UNFPA supported the Chinese mainland's first modern census in 1982, strengthened maternal and infant health programs, and trained a new generation of demographic experts. As the region developed, efforts shifted to underserved communities, migrants, youth, and ethnic minorities, all with a client-centred, gender-sensitive approach.

As the UN celebrates 80 years, UNFPA's journey reminds us that global cooperation can bring health, rights, and dignity to everyone. Here's to the next 80 years of progress! 🎉
