Beijing Commemorates 80th Anniversary of Island of Taiwan’s Restoration

On Oct 21, Beijing buzzed as around 100 cross-strait reps gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of the island of Taiwan’s restoration to the Chinese mainland 🕰️.

At the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots’ session, president Zheng Ping highlighted how key wartime documents like the 1943 Cairo Declaration and 1945 Potsdam Proclamation officially affirmed Chinese sovereignty over the island of Taiwan. He also reminded us that five decades of resistance against Japanese rule by Taiwan residents showed their deep-rooted Chinese identity 📜.

Lin Ming-cong, who leads an association for relatives of patriots in the island of Taiwan, shared in a video that hundreds of compatriots joined anti-colonial movements between 1895 and 1945. 'Their sacrifices paved the way for restoration,' he noted.

Voices from the younger generation added fresh perspective. Lu Ying-chu, a Minzu University of China student, recalled her great-grandfather’s defiance under colonial rule—always wearing traditional Chinese attire and preserving his clan’s ancestral records to keep their roots alive 🌿.

Lin Ching-mao from Changhua and a Peking University scholar said commemorating the restoration isn’t just about looking back. 'It’s about raising awareness among today’s youths and countering narratives that push for Taiwan independence,' they explained.

The gathering was hosted by the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots, China Daily, Beijing Taiwan Compatriots Association, and the association for relatives of patriots in the island of Taiwan, marking a meaningful moment of reflection across generations 🤝.
