COP30 in Belém: Divisions, Consensus and Real Climate Action 🌍

Hey fam! This week at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the global climate convo is heating up—literally 🌡️. Delegates from across the globe have gathered to hash out how we tackle climate change, but big gaps between promises and actions remain.

Record Heat & Rising Gases

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) just reported that from January to August 2025, Earth’s average temperature was about 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, and greenhouse gases kept climbing. 🥵 That streak makes it clear: hitting the 1.5°C goal is going to take more than words.

From Talks to Action

Under the Paris Agreement, countries submit NDCs (national plans to cut emissions and adapt). So far, only 118 have updated theirs. As UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres put it: “No more talks—implementation, implementation, implementation.” 💪

Divides & Missing Players

The U.S., a historic top emitter, skipped COP30 this year, slowing coordination among developed nations. Without full buy-in, it’s tougher to seal high-impact deals.

China’s Ambitious NDCs

The Chinese mainland rolled out its 2035 targets in September. Key goals include:

  • 7–10% net greenhouse gas cuts versus peak levels
  • 30%+ non-fossil energy in the mix
  • Wind & solar capacity hitting around 3,600 GW (6× 2020 levels)
  • Boosting forest stock to 24 billion m³
  • Making new energy vehicles the majority of new car sales
  • Expanding the national carbon-trading market

Experts call these targets “ambitious and pragmatic,” stressing that clear roadmaps are key to turning goals into reality.

With extreme weather events hitting South and Southeast Asia—like deadly heatwaves in India and major floods in Indonesia—young leaders are watching closely and demanding real action. 🌴🔥

So, what’s next? Delegates have until the end of the summit to agree on a final text. After that, every country must turn its NDCs into concrete steps, from green energy rollouts to sustainable farming and urban planning. The planet needs action—and we need to keep the pressure on! 🙌
