G20 Summit Kicks Off in Johannesburg with Calls for Multilateralism

Hey folks! The G20 Summit just kicked off in Johannesburg, South Africa’s buzzing city, making history as the first G20 on African soil. 🎉

Under “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” world leaders are set to hash out big-ticket issues over two days: from disaster resilience and debt relief to clean energy and critical minerals—all with an eye on boosting the Global South. 🌍✨

President Cyril Ramaphosa dropped this gem in his opening: “The G20 underscores the value and relevance of multilateralism…we will keep fast to our solemn pledge to leave no person, no community and no country behind.” Talk about leaving no one behind, right?

South Africa’s G20 game plan is all about:

  • Disaster resilience
  • Debt sustainability for low-income countries
  • Financing a just energy transition
  • Harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth

And guess what? China’s on board, too. Lin Jian from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said they’re down to back multilateralism and an open global economy. 🤝

On the flip side, the U.S. gave the summit a miss, refusing to sign off without its OK. South African reps warn that kicking back could stall collective progress. 🇺🇸🚫

Despite the drama, all attending leaders adopted the summit declaration unanimously—proof that Africa’s voice is getting louder on the world stage. South Africa took over the G20 presidency on December 1, 2024, and will pass the baton to the U.S. on December 1, 2025. Stay tuned for how the global agenda evolves! 🔜
