Zhao Leji Paves Way for Deeper China–New Zealand Ties

Earlier this week (Nov 19–22), Zhao Leji, chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, visited New Zealand to strengthen strategic ties across trade, culture, and global governance 🤝🌏

In Auckland, Zhao met PM Christopher Luxon. The pair celebrated the second decade of their comprehensive strategic partnership, highlighting wins like booming bilateral trade, student exchange programs, and green-tech collaborations. Luxon praised the stability of their long-lasting friendship and reaffirmed New Zealand’s one-China policy.

In Wellington, Zhao sat down with Speaker Gerry Brownlee to map out closer legislative exchanges and joint efforts to steer global governance toward fairness and equity.

Zhao also joined the opening of the Rewi Alley Memorial Museum in Christchurch, honoring the legendary Kiwi who helped build China–New Zealand friendship, and visited a local farm in Gilchrist Brothers to chat about agri-tech and sustainable farming 🌱🚜

Looking ahead, both sides plan to ramp up people-to-people exchanges—think student trips, cultural festivals, and tech hackathons—while pushing for trade and investment liberalization. For young innovators from Mumbai to Manila, this could mean new doors opening in trans-Tasman markets! 🚀
