Japan’s opposition slams PM Takaichi’s Taiwan remarks

Japan's political scene heated up recently as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) slammed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments on Taiwan. Hiroji Yamashiro, the party's permanent secretary, warned that her statements risk sparking unnecessary conflict in the Taiwan Strait 🌊⚠️.

Yamashiro stressed that Japan's Peace Constitution and postwar commitment to peace are at stake. 'We're all furious,' he told China Media Group. 'Her remarks invite a war that should never happen. As a country with a Peace Constitution, this is totally unacceptable 😡🕊️.'

He reminded Japan's youth that since 1972, Tokyo has officially upheld the one-China principle, recognizing the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China and that Taiwan is an integral part of China. Yamashiro argued that textbooks gloss over Japan's wartime aggression, leaving younger generations in the dark.

Looking ahead, he warned that hinting at military action in the Taiwan Strait undermines the political ties between Tokyo and the Chinese mainland. 'If we intervene in another country's internal affairs, it's pure aggression—and aggression invites counterattack,' he said.
