North Sumatra Floods and Landslides Claim 13 Lives Amid Heavy Rains

Deadly Rains Hit North Sumatra 🌧️

From Nov 22 to 25, relentless downpours caused rivers to burst their banks across North Sumatra, Indonesia. The Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) confirmed 13 lives lost after floods and landslides struck seven regencies and cities.

Casualty breakdown:

  • 9 in South Tapanuli Regency
  • 4 in Central Tapanuli Regency

A total of 37 people were injured and three remain missing in South Tapanuli, while data collection continues in Central Tapanuli. Floodwaters and landslides also battered Sibolga, Mandailing Natal, North Tapanuli, South Nias and Padangsidimpuan.

Hundreds of homes, schools and public facilities were damaged, forcing thousands of residents to seek higher ground 🏠. Landslides happen when heavy rain soaks the soil, making slopes give way and sending debris downhill in seconds.

Local authorities are leading search-and-rescue operations and distributing emergency aid. If you’re in an affected area, keep these tips in mind:

  • Avoid floodwaters—currents can be deceptively strong.
  • Move to higher ground as directed by BPBD.
  • Stay tuned to local radio or official channels for evacuation notices.
