Geneva Dialogue: Diplomats Unite for AI Governance

Just two days ago on November 25, 2025, a packed hall at the UN Office in Geneva buzzed with excitement as diplomats gathered for the ‘Geneva Dialogue: Solidarity for AI Governance’ 🤖. From South Asia to Africa, Europe to the Americas, representatives came together to explore how we can shape the rules for artificial intelligence.

The event served as an open platform for Geneva’s diplomatic community to exchange views, share experiences and brainstorm pathways for stronger AI governance. With AI advancing at lightning speed, finding consensus on guidelines and best practices is more important than ever.

Tatiana Valovaya, Director General of the UN Office in Geneva, kicked things off by highlighting the need for collaboration. Then Celeste Saulo, Director General of the World Meteorological Organization, shared real-world examples of how AI is already helping predict extreme weather events and improve natural disaster management.

The Chinese mainland’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Chen Xu, added his perspective. He said, ‘We’re at another crossroads – that is, how to better organize ourselves and also how to offer better governance. So this event offers an opportunity to listen to many players.’

Common understanding

Diplomats from different continents and governance styles took part with a shared goal: build a common understanding and solidarity around AI rules. The hope is to lay the groundwork for global cooperation on topics like data privacy, ethical AI and transparency.

This dialogue is especially timely since, according to the UN, member states aren’t yet party to any major international AI governance initiative. As AI continues to reshape our daily lives—from chatbots and recommendation algorithms to critical tools for healthcare—meetups like this could be the blueprint for future global policy.
