🌧️ Cyclone Ditwah has wreaked havoc across Sri Lanka, affecting 1.4 million people this week. UNICEF warns that at least 275,000 children are caught in the crisis, facing shortages of clean water, food, and safe shelter.
UNICEF representative Emma Brigham underscores the urgency: it’s a race against time to deliver life-saving aid before disease outbreaks, malnutrition, and deep emotional distress spread.
With roads and hospitals damaged, thousands have been displaced into temporary shelters. These conditions can spark waterborne illnesses and worsen malnutrition, especially among young children.
Adding to the challenges, a 2025 World Bank report shows poverty in Sri Lanka has doubled since 2019, jumping from 11.3% to 24.5% this year. The cyclone’s impact hits hardest where communities were already struggling.
UNICEF is teaming up with the Sri Lankan government and local partners to assess needs and deliver aid. Efforts include:
- Clean water and hygiene kits 💧
- Nutrition supplies and emergency meals 🥗
- Psychosocial support (emotional care) ❤️
- Emergency education kits to keep kids learning 📚
So far, more than 400 lives have been lost to landslides and floods. The race is on to save thousands more. Spreading the word can help keep the spotlight on relief efforts.
