HK Constitution Day Seminar: Tai Po Fire Tribute & Election Countdown

On Thursday (Dec 4), the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and the Liaison Office of the Central Peoples Government in the HKSAR co-hosted a Constitution Day seminar to boost public understanding of the constitutional basis of the country and the HKSAR.

Before kicking off, about 900 participants stood for a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po, which broke out last Wednesday. It was a solemn reminder that safety reforms cant wait. 🕯️

Chief Executive John Lee began by expressing deep condolences to the victims families and vowed all-out disaster relief and follow-up support. He announced an independent review committee to look into the incident and turn these hard lessons into concrete safety measures and institutional reforms. 🏗️🛠️

Under the theme "The Constitution and the Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation," Lee highlighted how the Constitution provides the strongest rule-of-law safeguards and institutional foundation for national rejuvenation—and how Hong Kong is both a participant and a beneficiary of this journey. 📜

Liu Guangyuan, deputy director of the Liaison Office, echoed Lees points, noting that the Constitution lays the legal groundwork for Hong Kong to integrate into the grand journey of national rejuvenation and leverage its institutional advantages.

With the Legislative Council election scheduled for Dec 7, Liu said this vote will show respect for constitutional order and the spirit of the rule of law, while supporting social stability and post-tragedy reconstruction. 🗳️

Overall, the seminar drew nearly 900 attendees from across the city, underlining how the Constitution remains front and center as Hong Kong prepares for the LegCo election and steps up safety reforms.
