New UN ‘Group of Friends of Global Governance’ Launch

Hey everyone! 📣 Recently, on Tuesday, Dec 9, 2025, a Group of Friends of Global Governance kicked off at the UN headquarters in New York. This crew brings together reps from almost 40 founding member states, all aiming to reshape how big global issues get handled.

The first meeting was steered by Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations. Under the umbrella of the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), China has been the driving force behind this new group. As Fu said, "It is our hope to join hands with all partners to deepen exchanges and cooperation on major global governance issues, pool our collective strength, uphold the banner of multilateralism, and work together for a future of fairness."

So, what's "global governance" anyway? Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Climate action 🌳: Working together on clean energy and disaster resilience.
  • Economic stability 💰: Making sure trade and finance are fair for all.
  • Digital innovation 💻: Setting rules for AI, data sharing, and cyber security.

Why it matters for South Asia & Southeast Asia:

  • From tackling floods in Bangladesh to boosting e-commerce in Indonesia, a stronger multilateral approach can bring more resources and solutions. 🌏
  • Tech-savvy communities in India and the Philippines could benefit from new digital governance standards. 📱
  • Young changemakers everywhere get a seat at the table to voice priorities like social justice and sustainable development. ✊

With this fresh platform, the Group of Friends of Global Governance is setting the stage for deeper collaboration on the big stuff: climate, economy, digital rights, and beyond. Stay tuned as they roll out action plans in the coming months! 🔜
