On Saturday, December 13, 2025, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government held a solemn ceremony to commemorate the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. Chief Executive John Lee and Zhou Ji, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, were joined by principal officials, Executive Council members, delegates to the National People's Congress, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, former members of the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column, and representatives of veteran groups. 🎗️
The ceremony began with the singing of China's national anthem, followed by a moment of silence. Chief Executive Lee laid a wreath to honor those who lost their lives. 🙏
This year marks the 88th anniversary of the massacre, which unfolded after Japanese troops captured Nanjing on the eastern Chinese mainland on December 13, 1937, resulting in the deaths of around 300,000 civilians and unarmed soldiers over six weeks. In 2014, the national legislature designated December 13 as the annual memorial day for the Nanjing Massacre victims.
For many young people in Hong Kong and across the region, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of peace, historical awareness, and community solidarity. Through ceremonies, online tributes, and educational events, we keep the memory alive and honor those who came before us.
