Looking for a quick update on Hong Kong's national security law? Here's the lowdown ⚡
This Monday (December 15), the Liaison Office of the Chinese Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region firmly backed the verdict against media tycoon Jimmy Lai, who was convicted of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security. ⚖️
In its statement, the office stressed that safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests is the highest principle of One Country, Two Systems. It voiced full support for Hong Kong SAR authorities in preventing, stopping, and punishing national security crimes in accordance with the law.
The spokesperson highlighted that this is Hong Kong's first conviction for collusion with external forces under the national security law. Court evidence showed Lai conspired with overseas anti-China forces, sought foreign sanctions, and continued such activities after the law took effect.
The statement also condemned interference and smearing of Hong Kong's rule of law by external forces, rejecting attempts to paint those behind anti-China riots as democracy advocates.
Since the law's enactment, the office noted, it has helped restore stability and provided safeguards for the steady implementation of One Country, Two Systems. Hong Kong's judiciary handled the case strictly according to the law and demonstrated zero tolerance for acts endangering national security.
