At Least 41 Dead in Morocco Flash Floods

This past Sunday (December 14), Morocco faced a devastating flash flood event that has claimed at least 41 lives and injured dozens across two provinces. Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through the Atlantic coastal province of Safi and the mountain region of Tinghir, causing widespread damage and disruptions.

In Safi, local authorities confirmed 37 fatalities and 14 injuries. 🌧️ Floodwaters burst into homes and shops, overturned vehicles, and damaged roads, bringing normal life to a standstill in both urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, in Tinghir four people died after their vehicle was caught in sudden, powerful currents and swept into a river—a stark reminder of how quickly flash floods can turn deadly on mountain roads.

On Monday, schools in four provinces were closed and large-scale emergency response teams were dispatched to rescue residents, deliver medical aid, and clear debris. Morocco’s authorities have warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, urging everyone to stay alert.

This disaster underscores the rising impact of extreme weather events in a changing climate. From monsoon deluges in South Asia to typhoons in Southeast Asia, many communities are facing similar challenges. Downloading real-time weather alerts and having an emergency plan can save lives. 📱⛈️
