China Urges US Not to Enforce ‘China Threat’ Provisions in Defense Bill

Earlier this month, at a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun spoke out against certain provisions in the U.S. Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). He said these clauses hype up a "China threat," meddle in China's internal affairs, and undermine its sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Think of the NDAA as the annual U.S. defense playbook – it sets funding and policies for the military. This year, it includes sections aimed at "countering China," which Guo said unfairly targets a rising global partner instead of promoting cooperative dialogue. 🤝

Guo urged the U.S. to view China's development objectively, and to follow through on the common understandings reached by the heads of state at the APEC Leaders' Meeting in Busan, South Korea, last month. By working together, he said, both sides can focus on shared challenges like climate change and tech innovation.

He stressed that the U.S. should refrain from implementing the negative China-related provisions and remove any adverse impacts. Guo warned that if the U.S. insists on moving forward, China will take resolute measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and development interests.

What's next? Both governments seem to be sending signals for a reset of dialogue – stay tuned as we watch how this diplomatic back-and-forth unfolds. 🌏✨
