Hey climate tech fans, listen up! On Friday, December 19, 2025, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) unveiled 'Fengyuan', an open-source AI model designed to level up extreme weather forecasting. 🌧️🚀
This cutting-edge tool promises sharper predictions for everything from monsoon season swings in India to typhoon paths in the Philippines and heatwaves across Sri Lanka, helping you stay one step ahead of the weather game.
CMA Deputy Director Cao Xiaozhong says 'Fengyuan' is a huge milestone—it's the sector's first fully independent, end-to-end meteorological AI model with its own intellectual property, pushing tech autonomy to new heights.
According to chief scientist Wang Yaqiang, the long-term goal is to build an observation-driven, multi-layer forecasting system that blends physical mechanisms with open collaboration, inviting experts to join the mission.
'Fengyuan' will boost extreme weather detection and support key areas like the low-altitude economy, energy security, transportation & health meteorology—and it'll back countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. 🌐
The CMA also rolled out upgrades to three existing AI models:
- Fengqing: global medium-range system now tracking 11 new parameters, including precipitation & solar radiation
- Fenglei: nowcasting model upgraded to direct quantitative precipitation forecasting for sharper extreme rainfall alerts
- Fengshun: subseasonal-to-seasonal predictor with higher spatial resolution for better temperature & precipitation accuracy
Together, these AI tools will boost disaster warnings, energy management, agri planning & international climate services. For young pros across South Asia & SEA, this is a game-changer in staying safe & prepared.
