🌍 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned the arbitrary detention of 10 additional UN personnel by the Houthis in Yemen.
"The Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained personnel from the UN, NGOs, civil society groups and diplomatic missions," said spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. He also urged the Houthis to drop any prosecution referrals against UN staff.
With these 10 new detentions on Thursday, the total number of UN personnel held in Yemen has climbed to 69. This situation is making it almost impossible to deliver critical humanitarian aid to millions in Houthi-controlled areas, cutting off life-saving support. 🚨
Guterres stressed the need to respect international law, including the privileges and immunities that protect UN workers and make humanitarian missions possible.
He added that the UN will keep working closely with member states, the Security Council and directly with the Houthis to secure the release of all detained staff. 🤝
