Gaza Famine Declared Over, but Hunger Crisis Persists

Hey fam, some good news… but it’s complicated. The UN just announced that the Gaza famine declared back in August 2025 is officially over! 🎉 That said, the food situation is still pretty rough.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 70% of people are living in makeshift shelters 🏚️
  • Winter floods are making hunger worse and hiking up the risk of hypothermia 🌧️❄️
  • Since the ceasefire on October 10, 2025, aid has flowed more freely—but it’s still patchy and unpredictable 🚚
  • No area is classified as famine, but the entire Gaza Strip is in an emergency phase, one step below the worst catastrophic level.

It’s kinda like those monsoon floods we see in Bangladesh or northern India—but smack in the middle of winter. Shelters get waterlogged, roads turn into rivers, and without enough warm meals, hypothermia risks skyrocket.

The UN’s food security monitors (the IPC) report that over 100,000 people are in catastrophic conditions right now, though they expect that number to drop to around 1,900 by April 2026 if aid keeps improving.

Back in August 2025, nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population—about 514,000 people—were facing famine-level hunger. Today’s news shows real progress, but the crisis is far from over. The ceasefire has paused two years of fighting, but it’s fragile: daily violations keep convoys, crops and local markets on edge.

So yeah, the famine label might be gone, but the hunger crisis? Still very real. As winter bites, keeping aid flowing smoothly and protecting vulnerable families in freezing conditions is more important than ever. 🤝
