Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Border Ceasefire

Today (Saturday), December 27, 2025, Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint statement to halt fighting along their shared border. The ceasefire took effect at 12:00 p.m. local time in Chanthaburi Province and marks a crucial step toward restoring peace in the region. 🤝

Defense Minister Natthapon Nakpanich and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tea Seiha inked the deal during the third Special General Border Committee meeting on the Thai side of the border.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Both sides will keep their current troop positions with no further movements.
  • No patrols or advances toward each other’s lines.
  • The truce will be monitored for 72 hours to ensure calm.
  • After a stable period, civilians will be able to return home and the 18 detained Cambodian soldiers will be released according to international norms.

Both countries also agreed to work with the Joint Boundary Commission to resume survey and demarcation tasks as soon as possible, following existing agreements aimed at lasting stability along the border.

This agreement comes after a fresh wave of clashes that began on December 7, resulting in over 100 casualties and displacing hundreds of thousands. Earlier talks at the Secretariat of the Joint Border Committee from December 24 to 26 laid the groundwork for today’s deal.

Back in October, a joint peace declaration was signed at the ASEAN summit on October 26. The conflict first erupted on July 24, leading to an initial ceasefire on August 7 in Kuala Lumpur, where both sides agreed to maintain their deployments and avoid reinforcements.
