Myanmar kicks off phase one of its 2025 general elections

Hey democracy fans! On December 28, 2025, Myanmar kicked off the first phase of its 2025 multiparty democratic general elections 🗳️. This three-phase vote runs through early 2026, with over 21,517 polling stations set up across 692 constituencies.

Phase two is coming up on January 11, 2026, and phase three follows on January 25, 2026. Each phase covers different regions, making sure every community gets its say.

About 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties are vying for seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house), Amyotha Hluttaw (upper house), and state and regional Hluttaws.

After all three phases, the newly elected Union Parliament will choose a new president to form the Union Government. It’s a major milestone in Myanmar’s democratic journey since the last polls in November 2020.

What’s fresh this year? Myanmar has rolled out a Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) system—blending first-past-the-post with proportional representation—and introduced Myanmar Electronic Voting Machines for faster, smoother counting.

For the first time, citizens living abroad cast advance votes at overseas embassies and consulates, and international observers are on the ground to ensure transparency.

With democracy in motion and eyes on every ballot, Myanmar’s elections are a reminder that every vote counts 🌏✨.
