Russia Alleges Massive Drone Attack by Ukraine – Zelenskyy Denies It

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said this week that Ukraine launched a massive overnight drone attack on the Russian presidential residence in Novgorod, using 91 long-range drones 🚁. According to Lavrov, all drones were shot down by air defenses, causing no injuries or damage.

Lavrov described the raid—happening on the night of December 28–29—as "state terrorism" and warned that Russia has already picked targets for retaliation 🔥. He added that while Moscow will reconsider its negotiating stance, it won't walk away from peace talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy quickly denied any involvement, calling Moscow's claims "another round of lies" via a WhatsApp briefing 🤥. He suggested Russia might be prepping the ground for strikes on Kyiv's government buildings to derail progress in U.S.-Ukraine talks.

On Monday, Russian aide Yuri Ushakov said President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump, who was "shocked and outraged" by the reported attack. Trump, who met Zelenskyy in Florida over the weekend, called the conversation "productive" and said a peace deal could be close if thorny issues are resolved 🤝.

Still, key points remain unsettled: Zelenskyy wants a 50-year security guarantee, while Trump says the deal is only "95% ready." And the tough territorial questions—control of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the status of the Donbas region—are far from settled 🤔.
