Short-Distance Road Trips Dominate China’s 2026 New Year Travel

As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2026, Chinese holidaymakers hit the road in full force 🚗✨

China's Ministry of Transport forecasts expressways will see an average of 37 million vehicles per day during the New Year holiday – a 9% bump from 2025. Most trips are short to medium distance, with self-drive tours within provinces to visit family and friends.

Passenger car traffic is projected at 30.8 million vehicles daily, a 22% rise over typical weekdays.

Rail travel isn't sleeping either: from December 31 to January 4, an estimated 77.8 million passenger trips are expected, with January 1 alone recording 18.25 million rides and 1,113 extra train services 🚆💨

Domestic flight bookings jumped 28% year-on-year, and international bookings climbed about 14%, showing strong demand across the travel scene 🛫🌏

Clearly, short-distance escapes are all the rage this New Year. Where will you head next? 🤔
