Violent Protests in Western Iran Leave at Least Six Dead

Violent clashes in Iran's Lorestan province over the past week have left at least six protesters dead and 13 security personnel wounded, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. 😢

The unrest ignited in Lordegan on Thursday after a sharp plunge in the Iranian rial, which now trades at over 1.35 million rials to the dollar on the open market 💸. Protesters hit the streets in Lordegan, Azna and Kuhdasht, voicing anger over rising prices and stalled reforms.

Fars labeled some demonstrators as 'rioters,' reporting damage to government buildings and banks. Security forces say they were fired upon, resulting in injuries and arrests. The authorities also warned that while peaceful protests are a right, vandalism and violence cross the line.

Deputy Governor Saeid Pourali urged respect for lawful demonstrations but blamed the turmoil on 'cruel' Western sanctions squeezing Iranian wallets. President Masoud Pezeshkian called for 'solidarity alongside constructive criticism,' pledging fundamental reforms to the monetary and banking system and ongoing dialogue with protest representatives.

The situation remains tense as Iranians continue to grapple with economic hardship. We'll keep an eye on any new developments. Stay tuned! 📲
