UN Climate Chief: US Pullout From Treaty Will Hurt Economy

On January 8, 2026, UN climate chief Simon Stiell warned that the United States’ decision to withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will leave the country less secure and less prosperous. 🤔

Stiell highlighted that stepping back from global climate cooperation and science could end up harming the US economy, jobs, and living standards as extreme weather events—wildfires, floods, mega-storms, and droughts—get rapidly worse. 🔥🌊

He pointed out that American households and businesses may face steeper costs for energy, food, transport, and insurance. That’s because renewables like solar and wind are getting cheaper than fossil fuels, while climate-driven disasters increasingly disrupt crops, infrastructure, and supply chains.

Volatility in oil, coal, and gas markets also risks fueling conflicts, regional instability, and forced migration. And with other major economies ramping up clean energy investments, the US could miss out on new manufacturing jobs and energy-security benefits. 💼🔋

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed a memorandum to withdraw the US from 66 international organizations, including the UN climate framework. As the world moves forward together on climate action, the US decision serves as a reminder: global challenges need collective solutions.
