Hey fam, this weekend at Farewell Spit on New Zealand’s South Island, 55 long-finned pilot whales faced a mass stranding. Early on Friday, volunteers and DOC heroes jumped into action to save these ocean giants 🐋.
Armed with tarps, slip-way boards and lots of coffee ☕, teams worked overnight after Thursday’s initial beaching. By Saturday morning, 34 whales were refloated back into the waves – a proper win for teamwork! 🤜🤛
Sadly, 6 of the whales didn’t make it and around 15 are still stuck, waiting for the next high tide. Local volunteers, iwi groups, and conservationists are staying on-site, monitoring tides and health checks to give them the best shot at survival ✨.
This rescue reminds us how community spirit and quick action can make a huge difference for our marine friends. Spread the word, stay informed, and let’s keep our oceans safe 🌊💙.
