SA Fire Crews Battle Ongoing Western Cape Wildfires

Wildfires are still raging in South Africa’s Western Cape, and firefighting crews are pulling out all the stops to contain flare-ups near Franschhoek and along the Overstrand coast. 🚒🔥

In the Cape Winelands, a blaze that ignited last Wednesday (Jan 7) in Wemmershoek is active. Officials reported on Monday (Jan 12) that teams have been working along accessible fire lines and using backburning—a controlled burn to remove fuel ahead of the main fire—to slow its spread. Aerial resources, deployed by the Winelands Fire Protection Association, have been crucial for tackling hotspots and protecting structures at Mont Rochelle, Chamonix Wine Estate, and nearby farms.

High temperatures and strong winds on Sunday (Jan 11) spurred several flare-ups in areas previously contained, but crews quickly doused them. So far, no injuries or property losses have been reported, a relief for local communities. 🙌

Over in Overstrand Municipality, progress has been steady since evacuations on Saturday (Jan 10). The Pearly Beach Fire Crew managed to contain the left flank of the fire along the Groeneweide–Panorama border, and mop-up operations are underway to snuff out lingering embers.

However, the fire around Stanford Village remains tricky. Renewed efforts are focusing on regions of old, dense vegetation where fire lines are hard to access. Crews are setting up new containment lines and using aerial drops whenever possible to cool hot spots.

These wildfires remind us that fire season is no joke. Give a shout-out to the brave teams battling these blazes, and stay tuned to local alerts if you’re in the area. Stay safe out there! 🌿🚨
