ICE Custody Deaths Reach 20-Year High in 2025

Its sobering: last year, the number of deaths in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody soared to 32marking a 20-year high. 😔 According to a recent Guardian analysis, this tragic toll includes newly arrived asylum-seekers as well as long-time US residents apprehended during broad raids or after serving sentences.

Causes ranged from medical conditions like seizures, heart failure, stroke, respiratory failure and tuberculosis, to suicide. Families and lawyers say repeated denials of medical care and neglect played a role in several cases.

And the trend isnt slowing: ICE press releases report multiple fatalities in the first days of January 2026. This spike came amid the Trump administrations push to intensify enforcement, leading to a record 68,000+ adults in ICE detention by December 2025up from about 36,000 two years earlier.

For those of us in South and Southeast Asia, where migration shapes so many lives and communities, these numbers highlight the urgent need for humane standards and accountability. 🌏✨ Staying informed is the first step: lets keep the conversation alive and advocate for fair treatment of all people on the move.
