Mozambique President Cancels Davos Trip Amid Devastating Floods

President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique has called off his planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos this week to prioritise flood relief efforts after heavy rains since mid-December devastated Gaza, Maputo and Sofala provinces 🌊🇲🇿.

The United Nations’ humanitarian office, OCHA, reports over 400,000 people have been affected so far, with river basins remaining above alert levels and more rain on the horizon. Local roads and bridges have been washed out, cutting off communities and making rescue missions challenging.

Neighbouring South Africa has pitched in with an air force helicopter for search-and-rescue operations. South Africa’s northeast also saw heavy rains, forcing a temporary closure of Kruger National Park – a reminder that floods don’t respect borders.

Scientists warn that stronger Indian Ocean storms, fuelled by climate change, are making these events more frequent and severe. For young professionals watching this, it’s a nudge to support sustainable practices and push for carbon reduction 🌍.

As Mozambique focuses on saving lives and rebuilding infrastructure, international partners and local communities are rallying resources. President Chapo’s choice to lead from home puts people first – a leadership moment that resonates beyond borders.
