First-Person: Spain’s High-Speed Train Collision Kills 39

Yesterday evening (January 18), at around 7:45 p.m. local time, I was on-site as a CGTN Stringer near Adamuz, about 20 km from Córdoba, when one of Spain’s high-speed trains on the Malaga–Madrid route derailed for reasons still unknown. The derailed train then collided with another high-speed train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, causing it to leave the tracks.

At least 39 people, including the driver of one train, tragically lost their lives. Another 170 passengers suffered minor injuries, while 15 were rushed to nearby hospitals in serious condition. In total, 317 people were on board the Malaga–Madrid train.

Emergency teams from fire, medical, and police departments joined forces immediately. The rescue scene was intense but deeply inspiring as crews worked to free anyone trapped and provide first aid on the spot. Despite the chaos, the solidarity and professionalism of everyone involved stood out. 🙏🚑

Investigators are now examining the wreckage to understand what went wrong. Meanwhile, Spain’s rail authority has suspended services on the affected track, and travelers are advised to check official updates before booking tickets.

My takeaway? Even in our fast-paced world, safety must always come first. If you’re planning to ride high-speed trains in any country, keep an eye on alerts, follow station announcements, and never ignore safety instructions. Stay safe out there! ❤️🚄
