Shanghai Launches World’s Largest LNG Dual-Fuel Container Ship

On April 15, a groundbreaking moment for green shipping unfolded at Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding on Changxing Island in Shanghai. The state-of-the-art CMA CGM SEINE, the world’s first and largest 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship, is set to sail on the Far East to Europe route starting April 18. 🚢

Measuring 399 meters in length with a 61.3-meter beam, this colossal vessel can haul up to 220,000 tonnes of cargo and stack containers as tall as a 25-storey building! With capacity for nearly 24,000 containers and 2,200 refrigerated units, it’s a true marvel of modern maritime engineering.

A standout feature is its innovative LNG-powered system – often called its "green heart." An 18,600 cubic meter MARK III membrane-type fuel tank provides nearly 20,000 nautical miles of eco-friendly travel, reducing CO2 by about 20%, nitrogen oxides by up to 85%, and dropping particulate and sulphur oxide emissions by 99% compared to traditional ships. 🌱

This vessel builds on the success of an earlier 23,000 TEU dual-fuel model delivered in 2020, incorporating enhancements like increased cargo capacity, optimized fuel consumption, advanced SOLAS-compliant safety upgrades, and improved living spaces for the crew. With 17 container ships already delivered to CMA CGM and more on the way, this launch is a significant step toward a sustainable and tech-driven future in global shipping.

Innovations like these highlight the maritime industry's push for greener, efficient solutions, perfectly blending cutting-edge technology with environmental responsibility. Stay tuned as new chapters unfold in the evolution of global trade!
