People-First Cities: A Sustainable Urban Revolution

Ten years after the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, our cities are at a crossroads. With just five years to achieve these ambitious targets, rethinking urban spaces to put people first has never been more crucial. 🌆

Recent visits to the Chinese mainland have shown a striking transformation in how urban development can drive inclusive growth. Over the past few decades, long-term planning and strategic investment have turned cities into vibrant communities. Back in the early 1980s, only about 20% of the population lived in urban areas. Today, that number has soared to over 67%! This change is powered by targeted social housing programs, expansion of transport, and public services that make everyday life better for millions.

Between 2015 and 2022, more than 80 million affordable housing units were built, and by 2023, over 200 million people enjoyed enhanced urban living conditions. Alongside this housing boom, the development of electric mobility, the creation of sponge cities to manage urban flooding, and the adoption of green technologies have set the stage for a cleaner, more efficient future. 💡

This model of sustainable, people-centered urbanization is a vibrant example of how cities can be reimagined to serve all residents. It’s a vision that resonates not just in the Chinese mainland but throughout South and Southeast Asia, inspiring tech-savvy young professionals to embrace innovation with a social conscience. Let’s celebrate and support urban transformation that truly puts people at its heart!
