Hey travellers! 🌏✈️ Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks on China's domestic affairs have stirred up big waves, leading to a surge in cancelled flights from the Chinese mainland to Japan this December.
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, as of late November, 904 out of 5,548 scheduled December flights from cities in the Chinese mainland have been scrapped – that’s nearly 1 in 6 flights! 🚫✈️ The move follows a travel advisory issued by authorities in the Chinese mainland, urging caution for anyone planning a trip to Japan amid rising diplomatic tensions.
It’s not just planes feeling the heat. Adora Cruises, a major cruise operator based in the Chinese mainland, announced it's rerouting its Adora Magic and Adora Mediterranea ships in Q1 2026. Instead of setting sail to Japan, they’ll head to hotspots in the Republic of Korea and around Southeast Asia. 🛳️➡️🌐
Why does this matter? Shoppers, foodies, culture buffs – travellers from the Chinese mainland are Japan’s biggest spenders. Last year, average spending by inbound visitors jumped 6.8% to 227,242 yen (about $1,456), with mainland travellers accounting for around 20% of that total, Xinhua reports.
From airlines and hotels to local souvenir shops and Insta-worthy scenic spots, Japan's tourism ecosystem is bracing for a rough season. Whether you’re planning a Kyōto temple visit or an electric Shibuya night out, this shift shows how politics can ripple through the travel scene. 🌸💼
Stay tuned for updates as we watch how this story unfolds in early 2026 and beyond! 🔍✨
