China’s Coral Reef Report: Tiexian Jiao Declines, Niu’e Jiao Remains Healthy

Hey everyone! The South China Sea Development Research Institute under the Ministry of Natural Resources has just dropped its first in-depth survey on the coral reef ecosystems at Tiexian Jiao and Niu'e Jiao. Using a blend of satellite remote sensing and on-site field data, the report offers a clear snapshot of these vibrant underwater worlds.

At Tiexian Jiao, the news isn’t so bright. The survey highlights three major concerns:

  • Between 2016 and 2024, the reef-building coral cover fell by about 68.9% — a staggering drop! 😮
  • The overall coral coverage is very low, with limited species diversity.
  • There have been reports of unauthorized fishing activities by vessels linked to the Philippines, along with signs of illegal construction on Zhongye Dao marked by Filipino writing.

In contrast, the coral ecosystem at Niu'e Jiao remains generally healthy, with an average reef-building coral coverage of 37.7% and good overall habitat quality. This striking contrast reminds us that even nearby marine areas can face very different challenges.

This report is a wake-up call about the need for sustainable practices to protect our marine treasures. Just like our favorite apps and social media trends, these natural wonders need continuous care to thrive. Let’s stay informed and support efforts for a cleaner, greener future for our blue planet! 🌍✨
