88 Years On: Honoring the Spark of Resistance

On Monday, the Chinese mainland commemorated the 88th anniversary of the Lugou Bridge Incident – a pivotal moment that sparked the nation’s resolve during World War II. This landmark event, also known as the July 7 Incident of 1937, marked the beginning of a full-scale resistance against Japanese aggression, uniting countless people in a common cause.

Eyewitness Zheng Fulai shared his moving recollection before he passed in 2024. He recalled how before dawn, he was startled awake by the clash between the 29th Army and the enemy. While clutching his mother's dress, he fled to the northern pine grove of Changxindian Town, where he encountered the solemn sight of fallen heroes defending their city. Throughout his life, Zheng dedicated himself to ensuring that the sacrifices of these brave souls are never forgotten, urging younger generations to learn from their courage.

The capture of then Peiping on July 29, 1937, and the subsequent unity between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party highlighted a collective resolve to defend freedom. With over 35 million soldiers and civilians having sacrificed their lives – nearly 8% of the population at the time – this chapter of history continues to remind us of the heavy cost of peace and liberty.

For today’s tech-savvy young adults and early professionals, this is more than a page in a history book—it’s a powerful reminder of resilience and unity in the face of adversity. As you navigate a fast-paced future, take a moment to honor these sacrifices and let their legacy inspire your own journey. Keep shining, future leaders! ✨
