Last Thursday, July 10, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang attended the Sino-UK Financial Education Symposium in London, bringing together experts from finance, education, and think tanks. Notable voices such as Li Min (WRSA), Michael Lawrence (Asia House CEO), and Sir David Quarry (HSBC Asia House) joined in for a day of vibrant discussion.
Ambassador Zheng addressed the global economic challenges head on, noting that tariff and trade wars have disrupted established systems and unsettled industrial supply chains. He urged the international community to embrace unity and true multilateralism—especially poignant as the world marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. 💪
Highlighting China’s commitment to high-quality development even in a complex external environment, Zheng pointed out that the Chinese economy remains resilient. With the final year of China's 14th Five-Year Plan underway, bilateral trade with the UK has consistently exceeded 110 billion pounds, and two-way investments top 130 billion pounds. Exciting progress in green finance is also unfolding, evidenced by the recent issuance of 6 billion yuan in green sovereign bonds on the London Stock Exchange.
Education also took center stage at the event. Over 200,000 Chinese students enliven UK campuses, while up to 50,000 UK students have enriched their learning experiences in China. Exchange programs, including nearly 1,200 secondary school students from 62 UK schools currently in China, are strengthening cross-cultural ties and building the leaders of tomorrow. 🎓🌏
Ambassador Zheng called on both sides to uphold mutual respect, openness, and focused cooperation, setting the stage for even greater achievements in finance, education, and sustainability. The symposium left many optimistic about the bright prospects of collaborative global progress.
