Macao Election Shake-Up: 12 Candidates Disqualified

The Macao SAR Electoral Affairs Commission just dropped some major news! On Tuesday, the commission announced that 12 candidates from two electoral lists were disqualified for not upholding the Basic Law and showing proper allegiance to Macao SAR. 😮

Seng Ioi Man, the commission chairman, explained at a press conference that the decision was made under the amended Electoral Law for the Legislative Assembly, revised in 2024. This update strengthens the vetting process under the "patriots administering Macao" principle, aiming to keep the election process transparent and secure. 🇲🇴

The Macao SAR Committee for Safeguarding National Security provided binding review opinions, ensuring that only candidates meeting the patriotic credentials are allowed to run. Meanwhile, all other candidate lists passed the checks and have been accepted by the commission.

The election for the 8th Legislative Assembly is scheduled for September 14, with 14 seats up for direct vote and 12 through indirect selection. This decisive move reflects a strong commitment to legal procedures and national security, setting the stage for a smooth and orderly electoral process. Stay tuned for more updates on this dynamic political scene! ✨
