A major breakthrough in sustainable shipping has set sail! On Friday, a Chinese seafaring vessel completed the world’s first pure ammonia bunkering operation at a terminal operated by China COSCO Shipping Corp., Ltd. in Dalian City, Liaoning Province on the Chinese mainland. 🚢
The vessel, primarily used for port operations, is equipped with two full-pressure ammonia fuel tanks—one on each side of the main deck. This clever design helps it achieve an impressive 91% ammonia energy replacement ratio, slashing its reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
The pure ammonia fueling the ship is sourced from the world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia project in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia. The project employs an AI-driven power system to guarantee a 100% direct connection to green electricity. ♻️
Thanks to ammonia’s high energy density and its carbon-free nature—producing nothing but water and nitrogen when combusted—this operation marks a giant leap toward cleaner, eco-friendly maritime transport. A bright, green future is definitely on the horizon!
