WWII Drama Dongji Rescue Tugs Hearts at Melbourne Premiere

🎬 The WWII drama Dongji Rescue held its Melbourne premiere at a reception hosted by the Chinese consulate general. The event, attended by over 200 people, marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Consul-General Fang Xinwen highlighted how China helped open the eastern front of the global anti-fascist effort, with the Lisbon Maru incident as a shining example. The film brings that moment to life, following courageous Chinese fishermen who risked everything to save over 300 British POWs from the Japanese-transport ship in 1942.

Sinologue Harold Weldon and other speakers stressed why remembering history matters, from inheriting the spirit of unity to safeguarding peace today. After the screening, Melbourne resident Joe Montero shared, “It was so emotional—I got teary a few times. The fear, the teamwork, the bravery…it really hit home.🌟”

Another viewer, Ben McMahon, praised the film for its message of universal compassion: “Life is life, no matter where you’re from. When someone’s in need, you step up. That message of love and sacrifice? It’s so powerful.❤️”

The film officially opens in Australian cinemas this week, offering a moving tribute to courage, unity, and hope that transcends borders. 🌏✨
